Panorama of Gold Medal Park alongside the Mississippi River near Downtown Minneapolis. Also shown is the Guthrie Theater, Stone Arch Bridge, Saint Anthony Falls and the Gold Medal Flour Sign. In the mid-19th century this area was known as the Flour Milling Capital of the World.
This view looks north, from the east side of Downtown Minneapolis. The Guthrie Theater is the blue building on the left, Saint Anthony Falls is behind the Stone Arch Bridge, and Northeast Minneapolis is the group of buildings in the background on the right.
This area is often referred to as the "Birthplace of Minneapolis" because of the natural hydropower generated by the Mississippi River at this location. This power was utilized by early industry (flour and lumber) beginning in the early-1800s which drove the economy and growth of Minneapolis at this time.
